Who First Invented Badminton?

Badminton has been around for years now and is widely known all over the world, even being an official Olympic sport. It is also said to be the second most popular sport in the world. The sport is played using a racket to hit a shuttlecock across the court between players.

There are two forms of the games known as the “singles” match and the “doubles” match where one and two players are on each side of the court respectively. The players would need to race to 21 points and must be winning by two points ahead or the first player or players to reach 30 points will win the round.

However, not many people know about the history of the sport, who first invented it, where it originated, and how the organizations started. There were a number of sports that were similar to Badminton. Greece also had a similar sport using a shuttlecock back in the 18th century. Other sports using shuttlecocks were also played all over Europe in the 18th century but were all under different names.

Who First Invented Badminton?

Although it is known that the sport was introduced in 1873 by the Duke of Beaufort in Gloucestershire, it was actually invented in Poona, India. The game was initially named after the town’s name and British Army officers brought the game back to England and called it “battledore and shuttlecock.” After the Duke of Beaufort introduced the game to his guests, it was then called the “Badminton game;” named after the Duke’s ancestral home “Badminton House of Gloucestershire.”

Clubs and Organizations

Afterward, more and more clubs started to play the sport and in 1893, the “Badminton Association of England” was established. While the International Badminton Federation (IBF) was established in 1934. When the IBF was first formed, it only had nine members namely Canada, Denmark, France, Netherlands, England, New Zealand, Ireland, Scotland as well as Wales while the United States took a few years before joining the federation. The IBF is now known as the Badminton World Federation (BWF) and has 176 nations as its members. There are also five continental federations also known as Asia, Europe, Americas, Africa, and Oceania.

The Olympics

Badminton debuted in the Olympics in the 1992 Summer Olympics held in Barcelona, Spain. There have been 69 nations appearing in the Olympic competition and 19 appeared seven times. Australia, Bulgaria, Canada, China, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Poland, South Korea, Sweden, Thailand, and the United States are the 19 nations.

The sport has five events in the Olympics namely the Men’s Singles, Men’s Doubles, Women’s Singles, Women’s Doubles, and Mixed Doubles. BWF’s ranking list is used to determine the qualifications for the Olympic competition. 29 athletes are selected for the singles competition and 19 pairs are selected for the doubles competition.
